What is Tantra?

Tantra is an ancient system of spiritual philosophy and practice originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. Often referred to as the “Sacred Art of Transformation”, tantra is a highly developed holistic system of spiritual, energetic, and physical practices intended to help its participants achieve peak levels of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The goal of tantra is to create a heightened level of individual awareness and awareness of the divine. Through tantra, practitioners seek to become more enlightened about themselves, their connections to all living beings, and their relationship with the divine.

Although tantra has strong roots in the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and is often thought of as a spiritual practice, in truth, tantra can best be thought of as a blend of practices from multiple spiritual and secular traditions. Tantra includes ritual components, like meditation, yoga, and Sanskrit chanting, that are integrated with more physical practices, like massage, breath-work, and energy healing. These practices can be used as a form of spiritual practice and they can also be used as tools to help people learn how to better love and communicate with one another.

The goals of tantra can vary, depending on the individual and the level of involvement in the practice. For some, the focus is on self-development, while for others, it is on physical, mental, and emotional healing. Despite this broad range of goals, tantra practitioners generally strive to:

1. Achieve a deep understanding of one’s physical and spiritual self and of the connection between the physical body and the energy body.

2. Elevate consciousness to reach higher states of spiritual realization and understanding.

3. Gain tools for accessing higher levels of consciousness, allowing one to more fully embrace life’s beauty and challenges.

4. Connect with the inner wisdom of the body and mind to create a more balanced and fulfilling life.

5. Harmonize the body and the mind to create well-being and vitality in all areas of life.

Practitioners believe that this system of spiritual practices can help them achieve balance and be more deeply connected to themselves, the universe, and each other. Within the tantric tradition, practitioners focus on five core principles: purification of the body and the mind; transformation of the emotional self; elevation of the soul; alignment with the divine will; and healing. Each of these areas has corresponding tantric practice and techniques, and by combining them, practitioners can experience a more meaningful life.

At the heart of tantra is the practice of meditation, which can take many forms. Many practitioners meditate on a mantra, or sacred syllables that represent the divine. The mantra can be chosen based on the individual’s needs and desires, and it can focus on relaxation, energizing, healing, or spiritual exploration. The intention behind the susma is to bring practitioners to a more enlightened state of being – the satori – in which true understanding and spiritual connection are achieved.

While meditation is the heart of tantra, breath-work and chanting can be important components of tantric practice. Breath-work involves controlling breathing patterns to affect subtle changes in the mind and body. Chanting can be used to create powerful vibrations in the body and energy field. Chanting also helps to create a deeper sense of connection to oneself and the divine.

Tantra is often incorporated into yoga practice. Tantric yoga combines postures, energy movements, and mantras to help practitioners connect body, mind, and spirit. Through yoga, a practitioner can work on strengthening both the physical body and the mind, while developing a connection to the spiritual aspect of the practice.

Tantra is a powerful tool and practice for seekers of spiritual understanding and connection to their deepest selves. Through this ancient system of spiritual practice, practitioners can bring transformation and healing to all facets of life.
